bottle with pillsGlucomannan is traditionally thought of as a type of colon cleanser. That assessment is correct, but it could also have some important weight loss properties as well. But to understand how that may work, it is important to understand how Glucomannan works in the body. Glucomannan originates from the konja root and once ingested into the body it absorbs water and other substances to create a gel-like state. This helps the stools in the intestines move down the track and out of the colon.

But during this absorption process fats floating in the body can be sucked into this compound, or gel-like state not allowing them to settle into the body. As this gel-like state moves through the intestines it gives off the impression that there is substance in the tracks, essentially telling the mind that it is full—hence the appetite suppression qualities.

I did find some research claiming that subjects taking 1 gram of glucomannan with 8 ounces of water an hour before eating resulted in an average weight loss of 5.5 pounds.  Other studies showed higher weight loss and a reduction of fat mass to a group of 25 obese participants taking glucomannan then a twin group in the study, not taking glucomannan.

How should Glucomannan be taken?

It’s recommended that glucomannan should be taken about an hour before each meal.  Two 500 mg tablets might do the trick, but each tablet should be taken with plenty of water, because there is always the minor risk of choking. If you have any problems with your esophagus there is the risk that these pills or tables and expand and cause obstruction.  If that’s a concern for you at all, consult your doctor before using.

Final thoughts on Glucomannan

Glucomannan has the scientific studies to back it up. But if you’re looking for a major weight loss supplement, this probably isn’t what you’re looking for.  But if you’re looking for an effective appetite suppressant or have had trouble dropping pounds on other substances this might be worth looking into, people have lost weight using it.
